After a brief career teaching kindergarten, Mary Virginia Liles, owner of Monograms, Inc. wanted to design and create monograms. Articles from Martha Stewart magazines fed her passion for monograms and her vision of having her own shop. Encouraged by her husband, Jeff and her parents, Mary Virginia set up a small monogramming machine in their home and began monogramming ribbon burp cloths for newborns, eyelet trimmed cotton panties for little girls, make-up towels for graduation presents and beach towels for everyone in her family. Her family and friends were her first customers and her concept for blending the old with the new took shape.
Exquisite, hand-sewn monograms were a part of Mary Virginia's Southern Heritage. "Aunt Marigene's" gorgeous, meticulously executed, hand-stitched monograms graced the linens in the homes of many family members. Their customized monogram designs were ordered from GEO. B. MAGGINI Importer of Linens and Threads in the 1950's. Her grandmother gifted these custom monogram designs along with her very dated McCall tissue paper monogram patterns to Mary Virginia feeding her vision of designing and producing monograms. Heirloom family linens, computerized monogramming machines and an eye for design shaped the concept for her business and translated her vision into a stylish shop with upscale products to meet the needs of her customers.
